Keep your child(ren) busy this summer by setting up a lemonade stand. After reading The Berenstain Bears' Lemonade Stand, work with your child to mix his/her own lemonade, set up a premade lemonade booth or make your own, and then start collecting the profits!

On a hot summer day Brother Bear and Sister Bear are outside when Mama Bear offers up some lemonade. As the neighbors in Bear Country soon begin to notice the lemonade that Brother and Sister Bear are drinking, they soon want some for themselves, prompting the Bear siblings to set up a lemonade stand, charging 25 cents a cup. The lemonade stand quickly turns into a neighborhood party, complete with fireworks.

Children are sure to love this quick read about the familiar Berenstain Bears' characters! The idea of setting up a lemonade stand and collecting some money is also sure to be popular with children!

While this book may be a bit lengthy for the younger children, it perfectly explains what children can expect on their first visit to the library while signing up for a library card. Not only does Amelia Bedelia learn the rules for visits to the library, she also learns how to treat a book properly and what to do when "accidents" happen.

After reading, make time to visit your local library - if you haven't done so yet, have
your child(ren) sign up for their first library card and experience
"checking out" a library book. Be sure to look/ask for information
about the children's programs at your local library!
It's been a LONG time since I've hit up the blogging scene, but I'm hoping to get back in the swing of things since I have a backlog of books to review! It is my hope to post on week days a review for a book and a related activity to keep this summer full of reading and fun, educational activities. Check back tomorrow, July 7, for the first in the Summer Reading and Activity series!

Sam's class has been busy preparing a special feast to celebrate Thanksgiving. As the rest of the class thinks about a special project and "thankful feather" to share during the feast, Sam feels as though he's faltering, and not sure what he's really "thankful" for. However, as the festivity preparations continue and eventually take place, Sam's project is ruined. However, with the help of his class, Sam discovers what it is that he's truly thankful for - the perfect thing to write on his feather to add to the class' yarn turkey.

This book is a great way to introduce young children to the most basic details about Thanksgiving - how the holiday came to be and the reasons that it is still celebrated today. There's still time - make sure to pick up a copy of your own while you're out finishing the shopping for your festivities! You might even find a new tradition to begin in your family!
I'm making it part of my goal to get back on track, as I keep receiving lots of amazing products and books! So, to start over...
Each month, the Guidecraft Educators share our honest feelings
about a Guidecraft product(s) and how these products would fare in an
early childhood classroom. This month's selection is from Guidecraft's Manipulatives line - Barnyard Activity Boxes.

From Guidecraft: Can you count them all? One red horse, two orange cows, three yellow
sheep, four green pigs, five blue geese, and six purple chickens. But
don’t forget the six
barns as well. Our 28-piece set features six wooden barns and their
corresponding farm animals to help with counting, sequencing,
shape-sorting, color-matching and more!
Each barn has the animal screened on one side; a shape-cutout on the
opposite side; a barn door with child-friendly elastic hinges; and a
color-coordinated
Acrylic panel so children can see who lives inside each barn! A great
combination of dramatic play and educational elements all wrapped up in
one!
In fact, the children moved so quickly to get to them, that I wasn't even able to get a picture of all of the barnyards together!

The children used the barnyards in MANY different ways, but by far, the most popular was using the animals as puzzle pieces and inserting them through the cutouts on the sides! This in particular, is great for increasing fine motor, eye-hand coordination and manipulating the pieces to make them fit.

The barnyards also came in very useful in individualizing activities to meet the academic and learning needs of the children. They foster a great deal of language usage (discussing numbers, animals, animal sounds, colors, etc). I used the boxes with several children to practice counting (as we have many children who struggle counting past 1). We also used our imagination and had a barnyard parade (creating patterns with the animals)!

The Barnyard Activity Boxes are wonderful for (literally) hours of play and engagement and can be used in so many purposeful ways! For the time being, they've found a home on our math manipulative shelf and are still being used daily! They are well worth the investment!!!
Each month, the Guidecraft Educators will share our honest feelings
by architect, author and designer Lester Walker. The beauty of TexoTM
is the variety of building systems found within one toy: simple puzzles,
shape sorting and color matching at its most basic level, the system
allows for a gradual progression to stacking the interconnected shapes
and on to advanced architectural models such as bridges, houses,
skyscrapers and more! Solid wood rods and planks coupled with the
geometric precision of molded plastic connectors enhance the design and
construction potential. Also included is a deluxe Activity Guide with
how-to’s, commentary and step-by-step instructions on maximizing the
potential of TexoTM. Ages 3+.
The TEXO builders were a HUGE hit in my classroom! I broke them out during work time (a time when children have a choice about where they're going to "work," what they're going to "work" with and who they're going to "work" with and then have the opportunity to follow through with that plan with staff support). Two children started out at the table with the TEXO builders, but the crowd quickly grew. One child worked with a staff member to try and build a model from the activity book that was provided - that proved to be a little too difficult for her and she quickly moved on to her own creations. Other children made simple representations - magic wands... this has been the biggest use so far. However, as their little minds develop, I'm sure the structures will as well!

While the children were exploring, I too, was exploring! Exploring how these could best benefit the children in my classroom. Fine motor coordination was most prevalent in my mind! Creative representation was also at the top of my list... along with the incorporation of literacy into the activity if children opt to take advantage of the activity guide with provides photos of structures that children can try and mimic as well as text that can be shared.

My Thoughts: The TEXO builders provide for a variety of learning mediums to be explored - color, shape, creative representation from simple to complex. This particular 100 piece set is ideal for a group of MAYBE 3-4 students... any more and things get a bit chaotic. The wooden pieces are very sturdy and held up very well. There are a few of the plastic "rod" pieces that are already breaking a bit at the ends. That was a bit disappointing, but to be expected when being used by 4-year olds. Overall, the TEXO builders are well worth investing in and will provide for many hours of enjoyment.

So... what do other 'Guidecraft Educators' have to say about the TEXO 100 pc Building Set?
All of the books in the series were written by Michael Dahl and illustrated by Oriol Vidal.

Absolutely love the series and the simple lessons each book teaches! The books are also slightly repetitive, (enough so to be efficient, yet not overwhelming) and ideal for pre- and beginning readers! Definitely want to get my hands on remaining 8 titles!!!

Children will likely enjoy the fact that Duck's way of using the potty chair is flying by and trying to aim! At the end of the story, after Duck has learned to sit ON the potty chair, Mommy reminds him to wash his "feathers."
These are the two books that are the focus of the "Monster" themed activity bag. Ten Furry Monsters is intended to help children with counting practice through 10 and introduction to the ideas of addition and subtraction. Glad Monster, Sad Monster was selected in the hopes of getting parents/guardians talking about those feeling words that children's so frequently seem to lack and to get families as a whole, thinking of ways to handle the different emotions appropriately.

To go along with Ten Furry Monsters, I used the Klutz Pom Pom Monster Salon to create ten furry monsters! I think these will be a hit! The monsters are included in the kit for practice counting 1-10 and to be used to introduce children to the concept of adding and subtraction through manipulation of the objects. (While not intended for this purpose, I'm sure they'll also elicit lots of vocabulary usage!!!)

Also included in the kit is an activity for Playdoh Monsters, intended to help children with fine motor skills. I included 5 small containers of playdoh and a small craft box with a variety of materials that could be manipulated along with the playdoh to create Playdoh Monsters. I really think this activity will be a hit, but playdoh will likely have to be replaced on a regular basis and the materials inside the kit will probably need restocking periodically.

Last but not least is the Build-a-Monster game. This game has players rolling the die, counting the number of dots and then using that for number recognition, finding the numeral and then following the directions on the director card. For example, when a player rolls a 1, they select the body for their monster. If they roll another 1 at any point in the game, the play advances to the next person. The object is to be the first person to collect all of the parts they need to build their monster. All of the body pieces (except the main body) are laminated and contain a Velcro dot on back to adhere to the felt body. The game is stored in gallon-sized Ziploc bag.

Clark the Shark learns a valuable lesson at Theodore Roosterfish Elementary School - there is a time and a place for everything. The lesson is learned after Clark becomes just a little too enthusiastic about everything at school - talking louder than everyone, munching on everyone's lunch, playing too rough at recess. When his friends start to steer clear of him, Clark is suddenly left wondering why. His teacher, through her use of rhyme finds a way to appeal to Clark to consider his actions and think of others at the same time. Clark takes the idea and runs with it, eventually gaining back his old friends and helping out a new student at school as well!

The book is a lot of fun and a great story - would make for a great book if there seems to be animosity that exists in your own classroom! However, although being geared for children between 4 and 8, I'd hesitate to use this with the younger crowd, as some of Clark's actions might set a minor fear in their minds about what could possibly happen to them at school. Wouldn't want to scare children before they experience the whole school-idea!

This is a great book to use when introducing children to the concept of home-schooling, especially if it's new to your family and something that you intend to try out! It briefly touches on the idea of home-schooling and what a home-schooled child might expect of the learning process. The book would also be great for children starting preschool or kindergarten for the their first schooling experience, as it really makes learning look fun and appealing! A great read for a new school year!
HarperCollins Publishers.
Review copy provided courtesy of publisher.

I'd say this book perfectly sums up what children look for as they head back to school - a little bit of excitement twisted into a little bit of nervousness! It shares the excitement of new haircuts, new supplies, new clothes, but allows readers to connect with the nerves that are often experienced on that first day of a new school year - uncertainties about teachers, being in a class with friends. It is a perfect combination to help children transition into a new school year while reassuring them that even if they aren't in a class with their best friends, they can still be friends!

This is a definite must-read before the new school year begins!

What a wonderful, refreshing, new take on a classic children's song! And a great way to start out the new school year! I'll definitely be using this new title as an intro on the first day of school in my classroom - especially considering what a hit the "Pete the Cat" series has been in the past two years with the preschoolers! Much of the song is the same, with just a few newer parts/phrases that fit the traditional Pete the Cat style... can't wait to see if it's a hit!

Not necessarily a back-to-school book, but a fun story none-the-less! When Splat joins his classmates from Cat School on a field trip to the zoo, he's super excited about seeing the penguins. However, as the class detours to see the giraffes and elephants, Splat's own pet, Seymour, upset from being left behind, opts to find a way to zoo and causes some trouble of his own, resulting in Splat not being able to see the penguins. However, Seymour decides to take matters into his own hands and saves the day for Splat in the end! A fun read!

When Mia attends back to school night before the start of school, she becomes very disappointed to find out her two best friends are in a class without her. Mia is upset and decides she does not wish to attend school if she can't be in a class with her friends. However, with her mom's insistence, Mia does attend the first day of school and slowly learns that she'll still have her best friends but now there's an opportunity to make new friends. A loving, caring teacher makes this difficult transition easier for young Mia. Great choice for a child struggling at the beginning of the school year after being separated from a close friend(s).

When Billy, a lively imaginative boy is paired with Mr. Booth, a very strict teacher, for the new school year, things are bound to be interesting! The first day results in near disaster experience, but the two quickly realize that they obviously have a LOT to teach EACH OTHER over the course of the upcoming school year. The book is an easy read and fun with lots of rhymes, however, it's more appropriate for upper-elementary aged, as some of the language may be a bit too advanced for younger children to comprehend. Otherwise, a great read and lots of fun!
The product provided to Guidecraft Educators for review was the 52 piece system.

My thoughts:

Without having had the opportunity to share them with children due to
summer vacation, I would imagine that the 52 piece set would be ideal
for a group of 2-3 children. Any more children would most likely result
in an argument over the pieces. However, this is an ideal toy for
cooperative play and I'm very much excited about introducing them in my
classroom this year!

The PowerClix building system could be used in a variety of educational ways, in addition to creative arts expression! The use of magnetics as a building system allows the opportunity for doors to open on the science end - how do you think the pieces stick together? What is a magnet? What does a magnet do?, etc.

The activity guide provided gives children lots of visuals for models to replicate until they seem to get the hang of using the PowerClix. I personally plan to laminate the pages in this guide and place them with the toy on the manipulatives shelf. I also think that I will be encouraging children to build structures of their own and then create additional pages to add to the guide that shows the childrens' creations and challenges other children to try building these AND new structures!

What I loved the absolute most about the toy was the simplicity involved in clean up. You can pretty much pick up one piece and use that one piece to pick up all the others... that is the force of magnetism! Amazing and super-simple clean up!!!

My only complaint about the PowerClix was my own difficulty in opening the packaging! I'm not sure if I was having issues or if others experienced the same difficulty, but I had to use scissors and literally cut the packaging into pieces to get out the PowerClix! Could have just been me, but I'm not sure!

Overall, as our Guidecraft contact promised, this product was DEFINITELY worth the wait! So can't wait to break these out in the classroom this year!

So... what do other 'Guidecraft Educators' have to say about the PowerClix 52 pc Building System?
My goal is to have 30-40 of them so each child can take one home each week for the duration of the school year. They're slow going, but once I get started, they develop quite nicely!

So, today... I'm sharing with you my first "complete" bag - everything's there! I have four others in various stages - waiting on books, materials, etc to arrive. They'll be done soon enough and I'll be sure to share those as well!

Before I share the specifics of this kit, I thought I'd share that each of the kits I've created are intended to share with families for a week-long time frame and have learning activities that focus on different areas of the Head Start Early Learning Framework. Once the families return the kit, their child may then select another to take home. PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE leave a message if you're interested in purchasing any of these kits and I'll make them available for purchase!!!

Contents (most available for download):

Snap! A book about alligators and crocodiles, by Melvin and Gilda Berger

Alligator Baby, by Robert Munsch

Learning Activities Guide

Venn Diagram (homemade with felt) and Venn Diagram sentence strips

Alligator's Hungry (scissor cutting story)

Alligator-themed scissors

A is for Alligator tracing sheet/Phonological Awareness Activities

The two books were selected based on the idea of focusing on letter A with an alligator theme. Robert Munsch's Alligator Baby is a book that has been shared with my groups of students in the past and has very much been enjoyed. Snap!: A book about alligators and crocodiles was selected due to it's ability to act as a science activity and expose children to non-fiction text.

From there, once the books were selected, I created the Learning Activities guide for parents. This gives them the specifics about the included activities, as well as a guide for discussion based on the two stories included in the kit. As you can see in the picture, the content area from the Head Start Early Learning Framework is shared so parents can see exactly what academic area they are focusing on. Then, the guide gives the information about how to use each activity. Lastly, there is a space with an example for parents so they are able to provide feedback on how the activity went over with their child - was the activity enjoyed? Was it successful? Did the child struggle? This guide is laminated and then hooked onto the handles of the bag using key rings. When the kit is taken home by a child, a copy of the same sheet will be provided, with blank boxes for the feedback. This will serve as the tracking sheet for homework response and In-Kind purposes.

The Venn Diagram activity may be a bit too complex for some of the 4's I work with. However, I figure if I expose them to using this as a means for sorting throughout the school year, they may have enough of an understanding to be able to handle the activity! It is intended to be used with the sentence strips (which contain details pulled from the Snap!: A book about alligators and Crocodiles) as a comprehension activity. I'm hoping that parents will read the strips and ask the children "Is that something that you know about the alligator? The crocodile? Or both the alligator AND the crocodile?" The venn diagram was made by sewing pieces of blue, yellow and green felt together to form the shape. The sentence strips were laminated and have a piece of velcro on the back so they stick to the felt while completing the activity.
my providing them in the previous supply kits I've sent home. Parents are leery of allowing children access to these and for this reason (and difficulty with cutting activities at school) I thought a great way to allow this exposure at home would be to provide parents with a story of sorts to help them work with their child on cutting and scissor use. I found the alligator scissors online and created my own story about how to use the scissors. I also plan on using this same story at school while teaching children how to use scissors!
The last activity in the bag is a letter writing story, which will hopefully help children in forming both upper- and lower-case Aa. I created those stories myself as well, centered on the alligator theme. The sheet is laminated and I will provide a dry erase marker and eraser for use with the worksheet. On the back side of the same sheet, is a phonological awareness activity that has children circling pictures of items that begin with the /a/ sound and then a column for parents to try and see if their child can come up with a list of words that start with letter Aa.

If you have any questions feel free to ask! More kits to come soon!
After a brief, unplanned 4-month hiatus... I'm back to blogging! And my
first post in my return has an incredible review and giveaway for you!
Read on to find out all about it!
Imagine my surprise as a package arrived for me one quiet afternoon and I opened it up to find this inside! My first thought, was "What???? Why is sending me this for my vacation?" The package arrived one week prior to my departure to South Carolina! When I looked at the label and saw that the shipment was from Candlewick Press, I knew I must have signed up for some sort of blog tour and forgotten about it! Sure enough, looking back at my emails, I signed up for the opportunity take part in the "Because Amelia Smiled" suitcase tour... 11 months ago! It's no wonder I had forgotten all about this!!!

Anyway, I popped the latches on this fancy suitcase real quick, interested to see what was inside (since I clearly had no recollection of the tour)... and discovered two hardcover copies of "Because Amelia Smiled" and four different smile props! As I began pawning through the book, I quickly discovered that the stickers on the outside of the suitcase were representative of the impact of Amelia's smile (how far/places where her smile ultimately traveled)! From the inside jacket cover: Because Amelia smiles as she skips down the street, her neighbor Mrs. Higgins smiles too, and decides to send some cookies to her grandson, Lionel... in Mexico. The cookies give Lionel an idea, and his idea inspires a student, who in turn inspires a ballet troupe... in England! And so the good feelings travel across the world, inspiring ever more smiles, kindness, and love along the way.

I absolutely love the story and the illustrations that go along with it! They are so whimsical! While it may be over the heads of many of my Head Start/UPK kids, I'm totally trying to use this book with them to inspire kindness amongst themselves and outside of the classroom, as well! Hopefully it works. The text is extremely simple, so with a bit of discussion and breaking down of things, I'm thinking they may be able to handle it! Perhaps it might be more meaningful if I tie it into an activity in which we "give some smiles" to our neighbors at school - I'm sure I can think of something!!!

Comment on this post, sharing with me how you intend to pass on a smile if you happen to be the lucky recipient of "Because Amelia Smiled" - ideas might be making a plate of cookies for a family member as Mrs. Higgins did for her grandson to sending a "smile" to a random address pulled from the phone book! Think of something your family would enjoy participating in!!!

My thoughts: Children are sure to be chuckling as Marley embarks on this Easter Egg Hunt adventure!

Description from Amazon.com: The day of the annual town Easter Egg Hunt has arrived, and Marley and his family are ready to find the biggest, most eggstravagant
egg! Marley is great at spotting the eggs in trees and behind plants,
but he just can't seem to get the eggs to Cassie or Baby Louie before
someone else snatches them up. So, in true Marley fashion, Marley
decides to forge his own path . . . right through the doors of the town
shops. Stopping into the grocery, the bakery, and the party store,
Marley creates calamity wherever his paws touch. But will his wild egg
chase end up with Marley finding the big, glorious egg before the hunt
is over?
Overview from Barnes & Noble:

Dr. Martin
Luther King, Jr., is one of the most celebrated figures of the twentieth
century. A crusader for nonviolent social justice, he led African
Americans in their demands for equality through peaceful protests during
one of the most tumultuous times in recent history.
The story is well written and accurately portrayed. However, I'd say it's a bit lengthy for most children under age 7. At the age level I teach, preschool, this book would be most appropriate placed a bookshelf for children to explore on their own and ask questions about but would not work as a read aloud.

One day when
Nelson Mandela was nine years old, his father died and he was sent from
his village to a school far away from home, to another part of South
Africa. In Johannesburg, the country's capital, Mandela saw fellow
Africans who were poor and powerless. He decided then that he would work

this incredible structure, the home of our president. The White House

Each month, the Guidecraft Educators will share our honest feelings
about a Guidecraft product(s) and how these products would fare in an
early childhood classroom. This month's selection comes from Guidecraft's Block Play line - Community Buildings: Set of 6.

The set of 6 community buildings features a hospital, police station, car wash, fire station, store and school. The buildings are simply designed, yet colorful enough to catch the eye of young children and inspire them in new ways. The blocks are wonderful for vocabulary building and pretend play, yet offer the opportunity for so much other exploration as well! Needless to say, I was very excited to see theses arrive... I had almost purchased them for my classroom prior to their arrival! They have been such a huge hit and have really added a wonderful element to young imaginations at play in the block area!

I held off on putting them out into the block area until we had started our "In the City, In the Country Theme." Along with adding these for the "In the City" component, I added a set of farm blocks that I had purchased last year... the way the children interconnected the two different concepts was pretty interesting to say the least! They took "that man" to the hospital because he's sick." The "kids" (pretend people) were taken and put into the school building and the "firemen" were stationed outside the fire house. When coupled with the pretend people, all sorts of curriculum content can be touched upon during child-centered play - sorting, vocabulary building, social skills, pretend play... the list can go on!

The children took it upon themselves to combine the two unique sets of blocks into one working area, building the road and extending it "a long way away" to distinguish the distance and differences between city and country life. As you can see from the picture on the right, the children in the foreground were working in the city. The children in the background were busy building their farm. The little girl in the very front opted to build "sky scrapers" using the plain old wooden blocks.
So far, I am VERY pleased with the quality of the 6 pack Community Buildings blocks. They seem very sturdy and have thus far tolerated the wear and tear of a VERY busy class of 20-preschoolers! Definitely a must have for this age group, especially if you already have the Roadway System and/or the
Splat the Cat returns in this new Valentine's Day tale in which Splat is the mastermind behind a secret Valentine surprise... for his teacher. Children are sure to love the lift the flap pictures, which contain questioning prompts that will get them actively engaged in the reading.

The "Mia" series is apparently a new series popular amongst the 4-8 year old girls. She's new to me - this is my first experience with Mia. With the fun, colorful pictures, what's not to like? After hosting a Valentine's Day party for her friends, Mia discovers that they ate the Valentine's gift that Mia's father had bought for her mother... and now, they have to figure out a new gift! Mia's creativity will likely inspire little girls to put a little creative effort into their own Valentine's... a great story to break out a few weeks in advance of Valentine's Day next year!
Dallas Clayton is a new author to me... but one whose work I'll definitely be exploring more! This book is perfect for a parent to give to an older child who has good reading comprehension or even great for a young couple in love or an older couple looking for a unique Valentine's Day or anniversary gift! Definitely a great book!

Everything Goes: Henry Goes Skating is a perfect story for beginning readers. The text is simple, with many sight words weaved throughout. The text is also predictable and many of the words repetitive. Young children will likely enjoy the story and the factual information that can be learned while reading/listening. This is a great book for discussing vocabulary and receiving information about the winter season!
Curious George: Three Tales for a Winter's Night.
November 2012.

In typical "Curious George" fashion, George finds all sorts of things to be curious about within the pages of these three stories - Curious George: The Surprise Gift, Curious George: A Winter's Nap and Curious George: Snowy Day. Kids are sure to love them, especially if they enjoy watching the PBS Curious George series.

As a person who grew up reading Curious George, the new adaptations are just not for me... my mind keeps taking me back to the white background pages with minimal illustrations, so for me, I'm just not in love with the newer ones. Lucky for me, I still have all my old Curious George books that I can go back and enjoy and share with my preschoolers!

Winter is in full force here in Upstate NY... although we're about to experience our January thaw! With the exception of having to wash the dogs feet after every outing due to the mud, I'm really looking forward to this thaw... It's been just a tad too cold for my liking, despite trying to enjoy and make the most of it. I'd take a day in the 70's right about now! However, that's not quite on the horizon anytime soon, so I opted to break out some winter-themed books to share... just to make sure everyone's enjoying Old Man Winter!

In this creative story, Carrie Pearson shares with readers the different ways in which animals (and humans) survive throughout the cold winter months. Through the use of a text bubble, baby animals inquire about how humans keep warm during the winter. The mother animal responds by the use of "no" and then sharing the ways in which that specific animal keeps warm throughout the winter. While the inquiry is ultimately about how humans keep warm during the winter months, readers will learn so much more delve into this creatively written story!

I actually plan to use this story in my Head Start/UPK classroom this week, in place of a different story I had originally planned to use... I think the kids will really understand the book and take away a lot of knowledge!

Sylvan Dell has also put out a corresponding Teaching Activity Guide packet that can be downloaded for free here. This is a great resource for teachers who wish to use the book in the classroom, as it provides cross-curricular activities to really tie the book into a wide range of subject areas!

Have I mentioned before how much I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE Sylvan Dell Publishing?!?!?!
The Berenstain Bears' return in this holiday tale which will provide both parents and children with much enjoyment. Throughout the story, many activities are incorporated in the Bears' holiday celebration and suggested for readers and their families to try, as a way to bring old-fashioned ideas into today's modern world. I loved the ideas suggested, many of are still done to this day by my family and will continue to be done in the future! A new must-have family read this holiday season!
When a Christmas present turns out to be a new kitty at the ranch, poor Charlie is in for an awakening he never expected. However, Charlie took the new kitty in stride and learned to find a way to like the kitty that arrived at the ranch for Christmas. Children are likely to enjoy this new holiday title if they're into animals or are a fan of the new "Charlie" series by the "Pioneer Woman", Ree Drummond!

Although slightly different than the "Pete the Cat" fashion most children will be used to, children are sure to love this lastest Pete the Cat title by Eric Litwin! When Santa becomes ill, Pete steps in to fill his shoes, determined to "give it his all," so as not to ruin the Christmas holiday. Children are likely to pick up on the rhyming phrases and may even catch on to the tidbits of "T'was the Night Before Christmas" that are subtly infused into the story... overall, I'd say this one will be a big hit!
Christmas and the entire holiday season can become an overwhelming time for little ones... especially if they're fully engaged in the hustle and bustle of the season. However, there's always appropriate times to settle back and enjoy some "quiet" time!

The Christmas Quiet Book quietly and simply shares many types of quiet time that can be enjoyed throughout this busy time of year.

Snow angel quiet
Knocking with mittens quiet
Cocoa quiet
Nutcracker quiet

Pair this book with a new mug, some hot cocoa and take a few minutes to enjoy the "quiet" around you while sitting in front of the Christmas tree with the lights on or while watching "The Nutcracker."

Each month, the Guidecraft Educators will share our honest feelings
about a Guidecraft product(s) and how these products would fare in an
early childhood classroom. This month's selection comes from Guidecraft's Art Equipment line - Desk to Easel Art Cart.

I was very excited to see the Desk to Easel Art Cart when I arrived home from work in early November! My classroom art center needed some sprucing up and this seemed to do just the trick!

This versatile unit can be positioned as an upright, angled easel or a
folded-down, flat workspace. Features easy-to-clean laminate surfaces,
with a write-on/wipe-off surface and paper roll on one side and a
chalkboard on the opposite side. Plenty of storage space including four
fabric bins, paper cubbies, and a paint/glue bottle area allows young
artists to stay organized while working. Includes an 18" x 100' paper
roll, five paint cups, and side clips for displaying artwork. Adult
assembly required. Each fabric bin measures 9"W x 9"D x 5"H. Ages 3+.
22.5"W x 26"D x 42"H with easel fully assembled. 24" flat desk height.

While the assembled unit is very sturdy, I, personally, found the it very difficult and clumsy to put together. At times it required three sets of hands to maneuver the pieces into the correct position. I also found it necessary to "lock" the cart into the easel workspace, as I feared that the curious little fingers in my room would be too inquiring and get pinched. However, the lock can easily be undone and will make for a great crafting table for other projects at different points throughout the year (it will make for an awesome beading table)!

However, none of these factors has limited the children's interest in the art cart - it quickly became the favorite area in the room (despite the fact that we have had an easel/painting area ALL year long, I can count on one hand the number of children that showed an interest until last week)! We had to have a waiting list of children waiting to use the "new paint area" and could not help the children clear up their artwork fast enough for the next! No one has had much of an interest yet in the chalkboard side of the art cart, but I'm sure that time is coming - the children love their chalkboard table in the house area and it's only a matter of time until they really discover that there's now a second chalkboard for their use!

As you can see, we've moved added an extra set of portable tabletop easels to the table so that extra painters can be at work!

The storage bins on the bottom will come in handy for storing an assortment of paint-related supplies and materials that will help them be easily accessible to the children. Overall, I think the art cart is a great piece of equipment, once you get past the minor frustration of putting it together!
