Lynne Cherry's Birthday

Today, January 5th is Lynne Cherry's birthday. She turns 57 today! Happy Birthday, Lynne! For those of you who aren't familiar with Lynne Cherry, she is an author and illustrator of over 30 award winning books! Much of her work focuses on teaching children about respecting, appreciation of and exploration of the environment.

In honor of her birthday, I have reviewed and provided lesson plans and activities to go along with The Great Kapok Tree, a picture book she wrote, and Chipmunk Song, a picture book by Joanne Ryder and illustrated by Cherry.

Cherry, Lynne. The Great Kapok Tree. 1990.
Voyager Books: Orlando, FL.
Ages: 5-8
Genre: Fable, Folk Tales
Guided Reading Level: R

Review/Summary:

The Great Kapok Tree is a wonderful resource for teaching young children about the importance of the rainforests. Cherry accomplishes this difficult feat by guiding readers on a tour through the Amazon Rainforest.

Two men enter the forest, intending to chop down a Kapok tree. However, the hard wood of the tree quickly tired out the smaller of the two men and he lay at the base of the tree to rest. While he was sleeping he was visited by all of the wildlife inhabiting the rainforest and given a message from each about the importance of its wildlife and vegetation.

Ryder, Joanne. Chipmunk Song. 1987.
Penguin Books, USA.
Ages: 4-8
Genre: Animal Fantasy
Guided Reading Level: N/A

Review/Summary:

Chipmunk Song will certainly appeal to the youngest of children, especially those who are curious about chipmunks! This book would be a great resource in any primary elementary classroom when students are learning about animals in winter.

A young child embarks on journey – living a day in the life of a chipmunk. The chipmunk and the young child, portrayed realistically in Cherry’s illustrations, take readers on a magical journey. Popping up from a hole in the ground, the chipmunk and child begin searching for food of berries and acorns that can be stored away underground for the long winter months that lie ahead. As the leaves begin to drop and the burrow becomes filled with a supply of foods, to tide the chipmunk through the long winter months until the bright sunshine of spring awakens him.
